SWEETWATER COUNTY SEARCH & RESCUE

In the month of December 1962 two teen boys were rabbit hunting on top of White Mountain. When they failed to negotiate a corner the vehicle rolled. One of the teens remained in the vehicle and the other went for help. The teen in the vehicle was found and transported to the hospital where he later died. To this date the teen who went for help has never been found.

While at that time there was an organized search led by police chief Louis Muir. Later he deemed it necessary to start a Search and Rescue team. So on February 21, 1963 the Sweetwater County Search and Rescue was born.

Sweetwater County Search and Rescue is a nonprofit volunteer unit of approximately 30 members working under the command of the Sweetwater County Sheriff's Department. SWCSAR works closely with the sheriff's department and other agencies needing assistance.  We also aid in various annual events. Our Command Center (R400) is located in Rock Springs and our garage (R500) is located In Green River one block away from the Sheriffs Office.

Sweetwater County encompasses approximately 10,500 square miles in the southwest portion of Wyoming, the landscape in our county varies from miles of desert area to rugged mountainous areas. Also the climate in this region can be vary extreme and we are prepared for anything mother nature throws at us.

The Unit is always seeking to incorporate new technologies into our SAR operations to increase our abilities. Radio systems, telephone, GPS, compass and map navigation are  important tools making searches and communication easier to do .
